“Why choose certified social use masks?
In 2021, as in the previous year, it is highly recommended and in some situations, mandatory, to wear a mask. In this sense, so that society can make an informed decision in the selection and purchase of masks that protect and help in the fight against Covid-19, normative documents have been published that specify the requirements that social masks must meet: The document CWA 17553:2020 Community face coverings contains the minimum requirements at European level for social masks, reusable or disposable, for the design and performance of Level 2 social masks (professionals exposed to
public) and Level 3 (general population), the test methods to be performed, rules for packaging, marking and information for use. The document DNP TS 4575:2020 Masks for social use defines the requirements for the certification of masks that must be met by manufacturers who want to certify their product – masks for social use.

We can divide the certification process into two stages:
1st Stage: Conducting accredited tests to the masks for social use APCER recommends the use of accredited laboratories for the tests of Bacterial Filtration Efficiency and Breathability (Pressure Differential), according to the standard EN 14683:2019+AC 2019, as is the case of EQUILIBRIUM Laboratory, with over 25 years of Laboratory experience, with which has established
contacts in the scope of the certification process. The DNP TS 4575:2020 standard also requires the performance of non-accredited tests, such as visual inspection and fit-to-the-head strength.
The tests are performed in accordance with the standards in force, taking into account the Internal Quality Control and Interlaboratory Tests, on the finished product and in original packaging.
On masks for immediate use – without washing, the test accredited in the EQUILIBRIUM Laboratory, State of Microbial Cleanliness – Bioburden (ISO 11737-1: 2018) must be additionally performed.

2nd Step: certification of masks for social use
After the tests have been carried out, APCER assesses the product dossier, which contains the results of the tests carried out in the 1st stage. With the positive evaluation, the masks certification is granted. Learn more about this
certification here. The certified masks for social use thus demonstrate compliance with European and national requirements, conveying credibility, confidence and security to those who buy.
